If you receive a positive pregnancy test and it’s determined you need an ultrasound, we will provide you with an ultrasound referral.

What is an Ultrasound?

An ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create an image on a computer monitor. The technician applies a gel-like substance to your stomach and rubs a small hand-held device over it. The lubricant or gel-like substance helps to reduce static between your skin and the transducer to get the best picture possible.

The image you see on the monitor shows you the inside of your uterus. You can actually see the fetus which will help the sonographer determine how far along you are in the pregnancy.

Why Do I Need an Ultrasound?

Ultrasound scanning can detect a heartbeat, reveal the date of conception and determine if your pregnancy is safe. There is a possibility that some pregnancies will be ectopic. An ectopic pregnancy is when the fertilized egg implants itself outside of the womb. This can result in extreme blood loss and abdominal pain. By having an ultrasound, you’ll be able to determine the exact location of your pregnancy.

Regardless of what option you’re considering for your unplanned pregnancy, an ultrasound is important because it will reveal vital information. For example, if you’re considering an abortion but an ultrasound reveals your pregnancy is ectopic, you’ll need to seek medical attention immediately. An abortion will not affect an ectopic pregnancy. An ultrasound will also reveal how far along you are, which will determine what kind of abortion procedure you can choose.
