Testing for an STD is extremely important. Often, STD’s have few if any symptoms in the beginning, but can become severe if left unchecked.

What is an STD?

STD’s are Sexually Transmitted Diseases. These are passed from one person to another through the exchange of bodily fluids during sexual intercourse. You can get an STD from vaginal, anal or oral sex. Even if you are using contraceptives, it is still possible to receive or give a sexually transmitted disease. The risk of getting an STD is greater if you:

Have more than one sex partner
Have sex with someone who has had multiple partners
Don’t use a condom during sex
Share needles when injecting intravenous drugs

How do I know if I have an STD?

The best way to determine if you have an STD is to take a test. Get tested if you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms:

A foul odor or discolored discharge
Bumps or sores
Fever

What types of STDs are there?

Unfortunately, there are several different types of STDs. Some such as genital herpes, syphilis and HPV (the human papillomavirus infection), can cause warts or painful sores on your body. Others, such as gonorrhea may cause infertility. HIV/AIDS interferes with the body’s ability to fight infections. HIV and herpes are chronic diseases that can be managed, but not cured. Left unchecked, each of these diseases affects you for the rest of your life.

Once we’ve spoken, you’ll receive your STD test referral. You can then be tested and treated for your disease. If you test positive, return to us so that we can work with you to emotionally and mentally handle the issue.
